Internet Today

We no longer have to sit at home in front of a computer to get connected with the world, we now have easy access to the internet 24/7 through smart phones and pads. While the world constantly grows digitally, technology becomes a fundamental part of our lives. Speaking of internet, did you know that today is Safer Internet Day? As adults and parents we should keep children safe and provide guidance in the virtual world as well as the real one. Notice I said virtual and real, because in this technology advanced era it seems more and more children and young adults can't seem to distinguish the difference.

Although we try to make it a safer zone for kids and for ourselves, are we really being a good example to our kids? Do we take out our smartphones and pads to blog, tweet, like, comment and update our status constantly? Have we changed the way we communicate with our family and friends to be just virtual? Do we have to post every single thing we do, place we visit, and things we buy? Have we become a society that constantly needs the approval of others in what we do, post etc? Do the amount of likes, you get make you a better person?  I don't think so.

As adults we must set examples for out children and set boundaries of what should and should not be shared publicly. A great deal of information is out there in public, you can search a person and find out where they live, what they do, how they look like, what school they go to, etc. This is very dangerous, especially for the young. I have tried to limit what I share and try to monitor on a regular basis what my daughters post as well.  I just wish it would be easier to reduce the number of hours spent online. What I try to do and also tell my daughters to do is to use the internet for homework if needed and if they have any social media accounts to use it to inspire friends and family in a positive way, above all to share the word of God and be children of light. I think it would be great if we all try to share more time with each other in a personal base. Go for a walk, visit a local park, enjoy food with out the need of constantly posting it to the "world out there", enjoy the world right where you are and with who is next to you at the moment.

What we should be doing more of:

Matthew 6:33~  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18~ "Pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."
