BATHING IN STARS, UN BAÑO DE ESTRELLAS

More and more I am continuously surprised and fascinated with how extraordinary nature is. There is no doubt it is the majestic work of our Creator. I read the following article in the Watchtower publications that my aunt and cousin give to me, and I thought it was worthy of sharing this natural beauty of our neighboring country.

On the island of Vieques, just off the coast of Puerto Rico, is a small inlet known as Bioluminescent Bay. The bay earns its name because it has what is reputedly the highest concentration of phosphorescent aquatic organisms in the world. Whenever these tiny creatures, known as dinoflagellates, get disturbed, they glow a greenish-blue. This characteristic creates one of the most unusual spectacles of nature.

Visitors who come to the lagoon at night first notice the luminescence when startled fish shoot away from their boat. The trails of the fish light up in the dark waters like green shooting stars. When swimmers take to the water, every movement they make can be seen in the dark. When they lift their arms out of the water, droplets fall off them like twinkling stars. “The experience is like bathing in stars!” exclaimed one visitor. This is definitely a place I would love to visit!

Cada vez me sorprende más y no deja de fascinarme lo extraordinario que es la naturaleza, obra majestuosa de nuestro Creador. Leí el siguiente articulo en una de las publicaciones de Watchtower que me hacen llegar mi tía y prima, y pensé que era digno de compartir esta belleza de la naturaleza de nuestro país vecino.

En la isla de Vieques, a pocas millas de Puerto Rico, existe una pequeña ensenada conocida como bahía bioluminiscente. Se le llama así porque sus aguas contienen, según se dice, la mayor concentración de organismos acuáticos luminiscentes del mundo. Cuando se agitan las aguas, estas criaturas microscópicas llamadas dinoflagelados, que emiten una luz azul verdosa, lo que da lugar a uno de los espectáculos de la naturaleza más singulares del planeta.

Los visitantes nocturnos de la laguna perciben por primera vez el fenómeno cuando, con el paso de su bote, los asustados peces huyen a toda velocidad, dejando en la huida estelas verdosas que parecen estrellas fugaces en un cielo oscuro. Ya en el agua, los bañistas se iluminan con cada movimiento, y cuando sacan los brazos, se desprenden gotitas que recuerdan las titilantes estrellas del firmamento. “¡Es como darse un baño de estrellas!”, exclamó un visitante.
