Mardi Gras (Carnival)
Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. - Matthew 15:6
Do you know the real meaning of Mardi Gras (Carnival)? Why day after day more people join these activities? All the Devils masks, costumes with bells and mirrors have their story and meaning. Would God approve for us to participate in this celebration?
As a child I did not participate or visit any carnival celebration, because my parents did not like to be in that environment. After I grew up it did not call my attention. Now, I will definitely not participate, because my curiosity of why this celebration, led me to find out the real meaning of "carnival" and by reading the Bible, I found out that these activities are not supported by the Bible nor pleasing to God. The worst thing is this celebration has masked itself behind "tradition and being part of our culture". Apart from Lent, in this country this season also coincides with the independence day, and I wonder what has the carnival to do with the Independence of the Dominicans, its culture and Lent! We inherit so many beautiful things from the native Indians, Spain, France, England and Africans descendants, why not celebrate these things?
What do you think about Carnival, are you one who celebrates and defends it or believe it goes against God will ?
You are welcome to read what I posted last year about: El Carnaval
Thanks for reading,

Yes, there are lots of beautiful things to celebrate. It is good to educate ourselves about the reasons why we celebrate certain holidays/traditions.

Hi Mari
ResponderEliminarI don't think Christians should celebrate any type of heathen/pagan festivals or holidays.
Take care and have a nice day :-)

Christians have baptised pagan festivals for two thousand years. For some festivals they are the faith before people had ever experienced the Risen Christ - God did not begin two thousand years ago, people have always celebrated the world that God has made and asked for his help in the difficult and scary times. When I wrote about Halloween - we have to ba able to bring what scares us out into the open and even laugh at it, and pray about it - maybe tht's what's missing? That the tradition becomes commercial. Mardi Gras is the day to let go of what is unnecessary and to gather strength for the journey of Lent. But only if you bring that intention to the tradition. Maybe you should create your own tradition for the day. The Celts saw it as a day of cleansiing - cleaned out their houses, ate all the fats and sweet food and met with their community to be 'shriven' from their sins (Reconciliation) which is why we call it Shrove Tuesday - you could do something around that?
